Problem Statement

Most quiz apps feel repetitive and static.

Through research, I found that users:

  • Lose motivation over time

  • Feel limited by solo-only formats

  • Miss real-time interaction

  • Don’t feel rewarded for progress

The challenge was clear:

How might we design a quiz app that feels dynamic, social, and addictive — without overwhelming users?

It wasn’t about adding more questions.
It was about designing engagement.

Goals

-> Introduce real-time multiplayer interactions

->Increase user engagement through gamification

->Make learning feel competitive yet fun

->Create a clean, intuitive mobile experience

->Build long-term retention through rewards & rankings

Research

Studied existing quiz platforms to identify gaps in:

  • Multiplayer experience

  • Real-time feedback

  • Motivation systems

User Research

Conducted surveys & interviews with students and casual gamers.

Key Pain Points:

  • Multiplayer delays

  • Lack of quiz variety

  • No strong progression system

  • Limited personalization

Target Audience

• Students preparing for competitive exams

UX Strategy

Instead of designing it as a quiz app, I designed it as a game system.

Reduce Friction in Onboarding

  • Clean, minimal onboarding

  • Friendly illustrations

  • Quick login flow

Clear Game Mode Selection

The home screen prioritizes decision clarity:

  • Play Online

  • Challenger Mode

  • Survival Mode

Each mode communicates purpose instantly.

Gamification Layers

To boost retention, I integrated:

  • Badges

  • Leaderboards

  • Player Rankings

  • Real-time score feedback

  • Celebration screens

Visual Feedback & Micro-Interactions

Designed animated transitions and:

  • VS battle screen

  • Confetti success screens

  • Progress trackers

  • Score comparison visuals

These moments were designed to create emotional engagement.

Learnings

Engagement Is Designed, Not Added

Gamification isn’t just badges and leaderboards.
True engagement comes from pacing, feedback loops, and emotional moments during interaction.

Speed Drives Retention

In gaming experiences, every extra tap reduces excitement.
Optimizing the flow from “intent to play” was critical in maintaining momentum.

Clarity Beats Complexity

Multiple game modes can easily overwhelm users.
Clear hierarchy and simple decision points improved usability without reducing feature depth.

Emotional Feedback Matters

Celebration screens, VS battles, and real-time score updates created moments of excitement — turning a quiz into an experience.

Designing for Motivation Requires Systems Thinking

Retention isn’t a single feature.
It’s a combination of progression, rewards, competition, and personalization working together.

Outcome

DuoClash transformed quiz-taking into an interactive gaming experience.

The final design:

  • Encourages competition

  • Supports both solo and multiplayer engagement

  • Uses visual rewards to drive motivation

  • Balances gamification with usability

The product feels dynamic, approachable, and engaging — not academic or static.
